Mt. Airy Farmer Takes Poison in Young Son’s Presence

At his home in Mt. Airy on New Year’s eve, in the presence of his eight year old son, Abel Van Sant, a well known farmer, drank a fatal dose of laudanum. He was 50 years old and leaves a widow and 13 children, besides a mother and two sisters.

Whether Van Sant intentionally and deliberately took his own life will never be known, as there is some probability that he committed the act while under the influence of liquor and when he did not realize the consequences. The fact that the laudanum which he swallowed was diluted with water and that he often took laudanum when under the influence of liquor or in a rage of temper, throws some doubts on the theory that Van Sant deliberately took his life. His family have the sympathy of many friends.
