First Colored Soldier Here Wins Commission

February 15, 1945

Sgt. J. Sidney Sheppard was graduated from the Officers’ Training School at Camp Lee, Va., on Feb 9, 1945. He now holds the rank of 2nd Lieut.

Lt. Sheppard is the first of the colored soldiers from this area to have this honor. He is the son of the late Levi Sheppard and Mrs. Queenetta Sheppard, of the White Rock Community.

Those of the family to witness the ceremony were: Mrs. Lillian Means, of Washington; and Mrs. Gladys C. Boyer and their mother, Mrs. Queenetta Sheppard. The lieutenant is now visiting his mother.

Lt. Sheppard was among more than 200 new officers graduated from the Quartermaster School at Camp Lee. Candidates for the school are selected by boards throughout the Army on the basis of initiative, military aptitude, intelligence, civilian experience and Army record.
