Joseph H. Tomlinson, Jr., Long Asst. Supt. At Springfield Hospital, Dies

Joseph H. Tomlinson, Jr., veteran assistant superintendent of Springfield State Hospital who retired in 1961, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 24, at the Maryland Apartments, Baltimore, following a long illness. He was 75.

When he retired six years ago, Mr. Tomlinson had completed 56 years of State service. Fifty-one of those years, many of them as assistant superintendent, were spent at Springfield. He served under seven of the ten superintendents who have headed the local hospital in its 70 years of existence.

During his long tenure at Sykesville, Mr. Tomlinson was active in local organizations.

He was a past president of Sykesville Rotary, having headed the local service club in 1945-46.

For many years he was a member and vestryman of St. Barnabas’ Episcopal Church.

He was a 50-year member of Freedom Lodge, No.112, A.F. & A.M.

His early employment at Springfield was interrupted by a year of Army service in World War 1.

Born in Baltimore, he was a son of the late Joseph H. and Amanda Baker Tomlinson.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anna K. (Nancy) Tomlinson; two daughters, (Patricia) Mrs. Thomas E. Gosnell, Baltimore, and Miss. Evelyn A. Tomlinson, Houston, Texas; and two sons, William G. Tomlinson, College Park, and Joseph H. Tomlinson, III, Baltimore.

He also leaves a brother, William E. Tomlinson, Logan, W. Va., and a sister, Miss Evelyn M. Tomlinson, Baltimore.

Services were held Thursday, 2 p.m., at Haight funeral home, Rt. 32, Sykesville. The Rev. Benjamin Colman, rector of St. David’s Episcopal Church, Baltimore, and the Rev. James Purman, rector of St. Barnabas’ Episcopal Church, Sykesville, officiated. Burial was in Springfield cemetery, Sykesville.

Pallbearers were: Active — Carl Wishart, Everett Dayhoff, Edward Moriarty, Stuart Hurline, William Atkinson and Woodrow Golliday; honorary — Dr. Kenneth B. Jones, Cambridge, a former superintendent at Springfield, William B. Kidd, J. Marion Harris and Robert E. Greenshields.
