Sykesville Fire Queen For 1968 Is Selected

Miss Bonnie Bangs was crowned Miss Sykesville Fire Prevention for 1968 at the carnival grounds Tuesday night, June 25.

Bonnie, a 1968 graduate of South Carroll High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. L. Bangs, Mineral Hill Road, Sykesville.

The new queen was crowned by Miss Brenda Ruby, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ruby, pine Knob. Miss Ruby was first runner-up in the 1967 Miss Sykesville contest who later became queen upon the marriage of Miss Joan Wright. Brenda is a 1967 graduate of Sykesville High School and will enter her sophomore year at the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus.

Eleven girls participated in the competition. They were judged on poise, personality, knowledge of fire prevention and questioned on things of general interest.

First runner-up was Betty Herche, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Herche, Long Meadows Drive, Eldersburg. She is a 1967 graduate of Sykesville High School and a student at Catonsville Community College.

Second runner-up was Shirley Pickett, Mrs. Richard Pickett, Springfield Avenue, Sykesville. She is a 1967 graduate of Sykesville High School and a student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus.

Other contestants were: Diane (Katie) Hettinger, Barbara Shane, Judy Stuckey, Barbara Parks, Brenda Green, Anna Kay Condon, Karen Prince and Linda Weaver.

Alvin L. Howes was master of ceremonies. The judges were Mrs. Dolly Metee, River Road, Sykesville; Mal Sherman, real estate agent, and Ron Mowery, Westinghouse Corp. Mrs. William Luebberman and Mrs. Robert Boller were in charge of arrangements.
